164 flood victims remain in Kedah shelters as waters recede in some areas

ALOR STAR: A total of 164 flood victims from 58 families remain sheltered at flood relief centres (PPS) in two Kedah districts as of 5pm today.

Two PPS in Pendang were fully closed, allowing 213 evacuees to return home as floodwaters receded completely.

Currently, 121 victims from 45 families are housed at SMK Changlun PPS in Kubang Pasu, while 42 victims from 13 families remain at Masjid Aisyah PPS in Padang Terap.

The evacuations followed flash floods that hit Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap earlier in the day.

Kubang Pasu District Civil Defence officer Captain (PA) Mohd Adenin Suhaimi attributed the flooding to the overflowing of Sungai Temin and Sungai Laka.

"The group includes 42 adult men, 42 elderly women, 34 children, three infants, and 15 elderly residents," he said.

Meanwhile, flood victims at Masjid Aisyah PPS increased to 43 from 13 families, up from 38 victims at 1pm today.

Padang Terap District Civil Defence officer Lieutenant Roshidi Kasim said most victims were residents of Kampung Tanjung Kanan, which was affected by a flash flood this morning.

He said water levels in the rivers and flood-hit areas are steadily receding.
