Almost 60 per cent of Malaysians use public transportation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has nearly achieved the 60 per cent target of people taking the public transportation regularly, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said it was recorded that 56 per cent of the people used public transportation service now.

"Ridership for rail and bus services was 393,049,501 in 2015 and 381,021,797 last year.

"The ridership was 289,761,387 from January to September, this year," she said in reply to a question from Fong Kui Lun (DAP-Bukit Bintang) on the effectiveness of rail service in the Klang Valley compared to other public transportation.

Nancy said: "The government wishes for more people to use public transportation as it provides greater benefits than using a personal vehicle."

She said the government collected revenues of RM342,126,519 from public transportation services in 2015 and RM436,125,641 last year. -- Reporting by Aina Nasa, Farhana Syed Nokman and Teh Athira Yusof
