6 cabbies among 45 nabbed for illegal gambling

KUCHING: Six taxi drivers were among 45 nabbed for illegal gambling during a week-long raid operations in Sarawak.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the six were picked up at a taxi stand at Khoo Peng Loong Road in Sibu, which resulted in the seizure of RM185 cash and a pack of cards used for gambling.

The raids were conducted in 28 locations in the state, including Kuching, Sibu, Miri as well as the rural areas in Kapit and Limbang.

In a statement, here, yesterday, he said two raids were conducted at cock-fighting pits in Saratok and Tatau.

“Our team arrested eight suspects, seized 10 live cockerels and other gambling paraphernalia,” said Dev.

Meanwhile, 28 suspects nabbed for involving in illegal 4D where mobile phones, printers, calculator, betting slips and cash amounting to RM4,836 were confiscated.

Apart from that, a team from the CID headquarters also raided a counter, offering cyber gambling reload services and nabbed three individuals and seized four tablets.

All the suspects, aged between 16 and 69, are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962.

He said the police would continue their efforts to weed-out illegal gambling in Sarawak.
