Universiti Malaya ranked world's 10th best university for engineering, says US report

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) is ranked as the world’s 10th best university for its engineering field, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

He said this was announced yesterday by US News, a leading college and universities ranking website, which provides nearly 50 different types of numerical rankings and lists to help students narrow their search.

“This is the latest and not many people know of this, but UM has been chosen by US News as among the 10 best universities in the world in engineering.

“US News gathers about 600 top global universities and in the engineering field, UM is placed at number 10 in the world.

“This is a significant acknowledgement of our education system," he told a press conference at the Parliament building here today.

On a separate matter, Idris said his ministry will look into claims that the government did not provide any allocation to the semi-subsidised Tunku Abdul Rahman University College for next year.

“We will look into it. I need to get more details on the matter before I can comment any further,” he said.

Earlier, Teo Kok Seong (DAP - Rasah) claimed that the college, founded by MCA, did not receive any allocation for the year 2018, adding that the government had allocated RM30 million in 2017, RM51 million in 2016 and RM60 million in 2015. -- Reporting by ARFA YUNUS, VEENA BABULAL and FERNANDO FONG.
