Woman, 8-year-old son killed in Sabah house fire; duo trapped by window grilles

KOTA KINABALU: A woman and her 8-year-old son were killed in a fire at their house in Tenom early on Saturday.

The charred bodies of Wong Siu Mei, 46, and her son, Wong Ka Seng were found in a room on the upper floor of the house.

It is understood that the pair was trapped on the premises by window grilles.

Siu Mei’s husband, Wong Vun Tsung, 38, suffered 27 per cent burns to his body.

Sabah’s Fire and Rescue Department said it was alerted to the fire at 2.35am, and deployed six firefighters in two trucks from the Tenom Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.

The blaze was brought under control at 3.10am and the operation was completed at 5.15am.

The cause of the fire and the estimated damage has yet to be ascertained. – BERNAMA
