IPOH: Road users exhibited exemplary civic consciousness today when they parked their cars on both sides of the Menora Tunnel, leaving the centre open to rescuers attempting to get to the site of an accident at Km 261.4, of the North-South Expressway northbound this morning.
A photo of them giving way to the Fire and Rescue Department as well as ambulance went viral, with many praising them and likening what they did to what also occurred in Korea on February last year.
The accident this morning involved a Proton Saga and Proton Saga Aeroback with both vehicles turning turtle. This resulted in the tunnel having to be closed temporarily.
Federal police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department principal assistant director (enforcement) Superintendent Mustafa Bakri Salleh said the accident at 11.30am caused a massive traffic jam and it was difficult for rescue units to get past the congestion.
"But thanks to the cooperation of all, including the traffic police, PLUS staff and road users, rescue units were able to pass to reach the site of the accident," he said.
Mustafa Bakri said as soon as the vehicles involved in the accident were removed, traffic flow returned to normal.
A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said it received a call about the accident at 11.31am.
He said upon arrival at the location, the victims were no longer there.
