Committee probing 1MDB promises fair investigation

KUALA LUMPUR: The committee tasked with investigating 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has given its assurances that things will be done fairly.

Its chairman, former attorney-general Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman, said everything will follow the provisions of the relevant laws and existing procedures.

“We will ensure the investigating team is fair to all quarters. This is in line with what the prime minister has voiced out, that the investigations need to be carried out according to the law and with integrity,” he told reporters at Menara Ilham.

Abu Talib said the special task force for the investigation would provide reports on progresses in the case to the committee he chairs.

On what had been discussed during the committee’s today, he said the focus would be on investigating the 1MDB scandal in order to find ways of recouping the nation’s money.

Asked whether there had been any discussion about a charge sheet said to have been prepared by former attorney-general Tan Sri Gani Patail against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, he said there had been no such discussion.

“We only discussed the investigation... we will investigate in detail and will be fair in our investigation, according to the relevant laws and following existing procedures,” he said, adding that he could not say more as investigations were still in the early stages.

The 1MDB investigation committee includes PwC Risk Assurance Services partner Nik Shahrizal Sulaiman, Naqiz Partners senior partner Syed Naqiz Shahabuddin Syed Abdul Jabbar, Financial Services Authority Indonesia senior adviser Faris Rabidin and Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism director and founder Cynthia Gabriel.

The special taskforce investigating 1MDB, meanwhile, comprises Gani, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, current MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull and former Special Branch deputy director Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador.
