Petition started for Kamil Othman to return as Finas D-G

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Kamil Othman spent two years as the Director- General of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), from 2014 to 2016.

While two years may seem like a short time, it would appear that Kamil has had quite an impact with local film industry players.

A fresh petition has been started on change.org to bring Kamil back as Finas D-G.

Started by filmmaker Zain Azrai, the petition, directed to the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo, is looking for 500 signatures and as at press time has garnered 304 signatures.

Zain, who described Kamil as a 'visionary former D-G of Finas', said in the petition that the latter 'must return to transform the Malaysian film and television industry into a major source of domestic and export income for Malaysia'.

On his Facebook and Twitter accounts, Zain also started the hashtags #kamilothmankpfinas, #bringbackdatokamil and #datokamilfinas2018.

Kamil, whose tenure as Finas D-G ended in November 2016, was previously lauded for his governance while helming the government-linked entity.

Prior to the end of his two-year stint, a petition was also started by 'producers, directors, actors and members of the Malaysian film industry' urging Finas to renew his tenure.

Various industry players at the time also threw their support for Kamil under the hashtag #KamiSokongKamil.
