KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes are on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as he entered the Sessions Court at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex where mobile phones are trained on him coupled with the constant burst of camera flashes.
Najib, clad in a black suit and heavily guarded by policemen, stepped into the courtroom where he is expected to be charged with multiple counts of criminal breach of trust and power abuse for graft involving SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Najib’s children, Ashman Najib and Nooryana Najwa Najib, were present but not his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, who will lead the prosecution, arrived minutes after Najib entered.
SRC was created in 2011 to pursue overseas investments in energy resources and was a unit of 1MDB until it was moved to the Finance Ministry in 2012.
The SRC case involves an alleged transfer of RM42 million of the company’s funds into Najib’s personal account.
The 1MDB Special Task Force was set up late May. Its duties include asset recovery, retrieval of money and assets siphoned off from the 1MDB state fund, and taking action against those involved in criminal activities relating to the case.
Najib was arrested at his residence in Jalan Langgak Duta on Tuesday and had spent a night at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detention facility while waiting for the authorities to charge him.
