Full enforcement of black shoes for schoolkids only in 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of black school shoes for government and government-aided schools will only be full enforced in 2021.

In a statement, the Ministry of Education said this decision was made after taking into account the views of various quarters, including the Parents and Teachers' Association, students, school administrators, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and suppliers.

It added that the ministry has also agreed that the implementation for a switch from white to black shoes would be made in stages beginning with the 2019 school term.

It will then carry into the following year.

"In this transition period, students are still allowed to wear white shoes.

"Also in this transition period, schools are asked to not enforce a ruling for students to wear black shoes," the statement read.

The ministry also advised parents to not rush into getting their kids to wear black shoes as they can choose to wear either black or white until the year 2020.

Previously, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik announced a policy change involving school shoes for students, changing from white coloured shoes to black.

This he said was announced following feedback from parents on the difficulty to maintain the cleanliness of white coloured shoes.
