PETALING JAYA: The fatal road accident involving three lorries and a car at KM 14.5 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) on Friday had police scratching their heads over the case of a motorcycle parked at the scene with its engine running.
The motorcycle owner, which was later identified as Amir Hamzah Mohd Rozali, 23, was no where to found and police now feared that he was also involved in the accident which claimed the lives of a man and woman.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the discovery of the motorcycle was relayed to the victim’s brother who then lodged a police report.
He said checks revealed that the Amir, who rode the red Yamaha LC135, was believed to have stopped by the roadside to assist the accident victims after a trailer transporting cement bags skidded and overturned in the 4.40am incident.
“The man was believed to have gone missing after the second crash which occurred a few minutes after the trailer crashed into another lorry, which in turn hit a Honda Civic.
“Two men who witnessed the incident later found a crushed motorcycle helmet on the road,” he said when contacted today.
Mohd Zani said the victim’s brother who received the information on the motorcycle yesterday rushed to the scene and found a waist bag under the bridge at 10.30am.
“Following this, an operation to search for the victim, who was feared to have fallen into Sungai Kayu Ara, was mobilised yesterday with the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department and police’s K9 (canine) unit.
“Search efforts were also carried out at the location where the cement was disposed, but we have yet to find any clue that could be linked to the victim’s disappearance,” he said.
Meanwhile, Damansara fire station chief Ramli Harun said the operation covered the two-kilometre riverbank and its surrounding.
“We will expand the search radius for today’s operation involving 13 and six personnel from the Damansara and Petaling Jaya fire stations, respectively, along with two tracker dogs from the police’s K9 units,” he said.
