SHAH ALAM: Sungai Klang will be turned into a new source of economy for the state through the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.
Menteri Besar Selangor Amirudin Shari said the project, which involved 35,612ha land around the river would emphasise on the urban regeneration concept.
He said it involved development components like commerce, hospitality, tourism, housing and service industry.
“The project is also aimed at improving the water quality at the river basin and reserve to Class II (requires conventional treatment; suitable for recreational use).
“This would also help (the authorities in) identifying the source of pollution, monitoring and carrying out law enforcement pertaining the disposal of waste into the river,” he said in his speech at the state-level World Urban Planning Day launched by Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, here today.
Gracing the event was Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
Amirudin said the cleanliness and beautification efforts on Sungai Klang would also include plans to provide alternative mode of public transportation, particularly on the stretch between the river mouth and Subang Jaya municipality.
“The Selangor government has agreed to adopt and implement SMG Master Plan and it was included in the Klang Local Plan (Replacement) 2035,” he said.
