Jobless man gets 2 years jail for possessing terror-related items

KUALA LUMPUR: A 22-year-old man was sentenced to two years jail by the High Court for possessing items related to a terrorist group last year.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali handed down the sentence on Muhammad Aabid Zarkasi when the accused pleaded guilty to the offence today.

Nazlan in his judgement said the terror-related offence is a serious crime and could destabilised the nation.

“This offence can lead the accused to commit more serious crimes,” he said.

The court also ordered Aabid’s jail sentence to run from the date of his arrest on Sept 8, 2017.

Aabid charged with possessing 32 pictures, 13 PDF documents, and 53 videos related to Ismail State (IS) in his black Asus handphone.

The jobless man was also charged with possessing a picture, two PDF documents and 10 videos related to IS in his thumb drive.

He allegedly committed the offences at Jalan Maju 3, Taman Seri Maju, Bagan Serai, Kerian, in Perak at 11.05pm on Sept 8, 2017.

The offence falls under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum seven years’ imprisonment, or a fine and possible forfeiture of the items, upon conviction.

Counsel Mohamad Hafiz Jalaludin who represented the accused pleaded for minimum sentence.

He said his client was remorseful of his crime and a young offender.

However, deputy public prosecutor Fadzlan Mohd Noor pressed for deterrent sentence as the case involved public interest.
