RANTAU PANJANG: Thailand has intensified security along the Sungai Golok border following the multiple bomb explosions and shooting incidents in the country’s southern provinces recently.
Sungai Golok police chief Colonel Prayut Phongsanti said checks must be carried out to ensure the safety of those in Thailand as well as tourists, including Malaysians.
“Although the latest bombing attacks did not happen in Sungai Golok, we must take precaution to ensure nothing bad happens here,” he told NSTP today.
He said checks would be carried out along the Thai areas that border Kelantan.
Meanwhile, checks by NSTP at several illegal jetties, here, found Malaysians still crossing over to the Sungai Golok town as usual for shopping or meeting relatives.
Several boat operators were also spotted conducting their operations as early as 7am today.
A local from Kota Bharu said the bombings in Narathiwat would not stop Malaysians from travelling across the border.
“Although no incident happened in the Sungai Golok town, we still go there for shopping as usual,” said Siti Aisyah Kamaruzaman, 37.
There has been a spate of bombings in Narathiwat. The most recent one was on Saturday in which four home-made bombs exploded in four different places in the province. No injuries or deaths were reporterd.
Sungai Golok sits within the Narathiwat province.
Last Wednesday, two bombs exploded on Samila Beach in Songkhla.
