KUALA LUMPUR: Jalan Semangat in Petaling Jaya will now be known as Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim.
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah gave his consent for the street to be renamed in honouring the contributions of the late renowned historian.
This was confirmed by Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari in a statement today.
Khoo died at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) in Petaling Jaya on May 28 after a brief illness at 82.
"He leaves behind his legacy as a nationalist and a patriot, specifically with his involvement in drafting the Rukun Negara as an effort to restore the nation's harmony post May 13, 1969.
"As a historian, he contributed immensely in the drafting of Malaysia's historiography in the 19th century.
"Among his works included The Western Malay States 1850-1873, The Effects of Commercial Development on Malay Politics which have become canons in the written works of Malaysia's history," Amirudin said.
In a separate matter, Amirudin said the Selangor state government has also fixed that all road signages in the state will only use Bahasa Melayu.
"This is in line with Article 152 of the Federal Constitution and the National Language Act 1963/1967.
"This matter has also earned the attention of the Sultan of Selangor who decreed and advised the state government to honour Bahasa Melayu by ensuring that Bahasa Melayu is the only language used on official state government signages including those of local councils," he said.
