'Awang Besul' the tiger dies

KUALA LUMPUR: The "tame" tiger that was found roaming in Kampung Besul Lama in Dungun, Terengganu has died.

Named "Awang Besul" after it was captured by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), the male tiger was sent to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) in Sungkai, Perak.

Its tame behaviour was then attributed to Canine Distemper.

In a statement today, Perhilitan informed tha after various intensive efforts were carried out to save "Awang Besul", the tiger died at about 5.30am today.

A post-mortem would be conducted soon, the department informed.

"The department does not discount the possibility that Awang Besul was infected by Canine Distemper from other wildlife around Kampung Besul Lama, Bukit Besi, Dungun in Terengganu," the statement said.

It added that to ensure the safety of villagers in the area, Perhilitan would continue to monitor the location and set traps for the other tiger.

It was earlier reported that villagers spotted two tigers roaming in the village.

"Awang Besul" is the only tiger that has been captured so far.
