KUALA LUMPUR: Heavy traffic was recorded at the Malaysia-Singapore checkpoints and the North-South Expressway (NSE) as many return to Singapore and the federal capital after the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration.
Johor Baru Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahurinain Jais said traffic at the border with Singapore had begun to build up since 3pm yesterday.
“The congestion took place at the Immigration inspection counters. Traffic builds up at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex today as Malaysians and Singaporeans head back to the republic after a four-day public holiday that started on Friday.
“Major affected roads are the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam and Jalan Bukit Chagar heading towards the CIQ,” he told the New Straits Times.
He added that traffic was smooth after the Immigration checkpoint.
Meanwhile, traffic on the NSE heading to the capital was also reported to be slow-moving as Malaysians start to return to the Klang Valley.
A Malaysian Highway Authority spokesman said the affected stretches were Bukit Tambun to Juru, Sungai Petani to Bertam, Bukit Gantang to Bukit Berapit, Menora tunnel to Jelapang, Ipoh Selatan to Gua Tempurung, Bidor to Sungkai and Bukit Tagar to Sungai Buaya.
He said traffic was also slow from Pagor to Jasin, Ayer Keroh to Port Dickson and Bandar Ainsdale to Nilai.
On the Karak Highway, he said, there were only two areas with high volume of traffic — Bentong to Bukit Tinggi and the Gombak rest area heading to the Gombak toll plaza.
