KOTA BARU: Certain drug syndicates are turning to Malaysia as a transit point before re-exporting the drugs to other countries.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Khalil Kader Mohd said this was based on the drug bust by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Selangor last month.
“Based on the recent seizure, the drugs are heading south and to other countries. There are attempts (to make Malaysia as a transit point) made by certain syndicates but the police as well as the Customs Department will ensure that this does not happen.
“We will ensure that Malaysia will not turn into a drug transit point and we will do whatever necessary to prevent this from happening,” he told a press conference at Kelantan police headquarters here today.
He added that the drug menace in the country would become a serious problem if left unchecked.
“We seek continuous cooperation from the public and they can call the police hotline at 012-2087222 to give information,” he said.
Last month, about RM676 million worth of cocaine and ketamine were seized in two raids in Selangor under Ops Soda. It was believed that the drugs were meant for export to a third country.
Customs Department director-general Datuk Seri Paddy Abdul Halim said the drugs were brought into the country from Pakistan and Ecuador via Port Klang, before they were sent to two locations.
He believed Malaysia was regarded as a transit point for the drugs before they were distributed to other countries.
