Malaysia floods: Victims surge to 2,371 people

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Peninsular Malaysia has soared to 2,371 people from 657 families who are taking shelter at temporary relief centres across six states, as of 8am today.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and the Civil Defence Force (APM), the toll of victims rose from 1,971 people at 8pm on Monday.

In SELANGOR, which has the highest number of flood victims, 858 people are taking shelter at four PPS in Kuala Selangor as of this morning, said the Smart Selangor Command Centre (SSCC).

In JOHOR, 524 evacuees continue to be housed at 10 PPS in badly-flooded Batu Pahat, Pontian, Kulaijaya and Kluang, said state Local Government, Urban Wellbeing and Environment Committee chairman Tan Chen Choon.

In PERAK, which saw a sharp increase in flood victims overnight, 617 people have been placed at seven PPS in the worst-hit districts of Hilir Perak, Manjung and Batang Padang.

In PENANG, 155 people are still taking shelter at three PPS in Seberang Perai Tengah, said Penang Welfare, Caring Society, and Environmental Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

In KEDAH, 206 victims were evacuated to three PPS in the badly-hit districts of Pendang, Kulim and Kubang Pasu, said the APM.

In PERLIS, the latest state to be hit by floods, 81 evacuees were moved to a PPS in Chuping.

Meanwhile, Nadma and the APM said floodwaters in many of the affected districts are at dangerous levels, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Nadma also announced the closure to all vehicles of the Jalan Bagan Serai-Alor Pongsu-Selama highway in Kerian, Perak, which is submerged in floodwaters.
