KOTA BHARU: Muhammad Arfan Ziqri is barely two years old and is unable to grasp the fact that his parents have passed away.
"He was calling out for his mother several times last night because he misses her, then he fell asleep," Muhammad Arfan's grandmother Fauziah Dollah said.
Muhammad Arfan is the son of Nurul Ashikin Kamaruddin, 27, who was killed along with her husband Lance Corporal Muhammad Syakiran Shamsuddin, 30, in a road accident yesterday.
The accident happened while the two were on a motorcycle travelling along Jalan Syed Putra in Kuala Lumpur at 8.30am when they crashed into the back of a lorry.
Fauziah said she will take care of Muhammad Arfan with her husband Kamaruddin Harun, 60 because the child is close to her youngest daughter, Diana Kamaruddin, 25.
"Arfan can't speak (properly) yet, but last night he kept calling for his mother, he really misses her because they were close.
"After the accident, Arfan appeared to be looking for his parents and wasn't cheerful.
"He also did not drink as much milk. Only today he looks a bit more happy, perhaps because we've had many visitors at home.
"Although sad with what is to become of my grandson, I accept what happened to my daughter and son-in-law as fate," she said when met at her home in Jalan Tama Sri Talang, Kadok, here, today.
She said her daughter and her husband often returned to her house whenever they were on holiday.
"My son-in-law would usually send my daughter to work at the Works Department in Kuala Lumpur from their house in Shah Alam.
"If he was working, my daughter would usually go to work by commuter," she said.
Meanwhile, post-mortem revealed that the late Nurul Ashikin was pregnant with twins.
The remains of both husband and wife were laid to rest early this morning at about 2.20am at the Rekang Hilir Muslim Cemetery in Bachok.
Also present to pay his last respects was Bachok district police chief Dep Supt Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah.
