65 killed on Malaysian roads in last 5 days

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 65 people were killed in road accidents nationwide since the start of Op Selamat, which began in conjunction with the Chinese New Year travel rush.

Motorcyclists and pillion riders comprise the majority of deaths, at 47, Bernama reported.

A total of 8,570 road crashes involving 13,038 vehicles were recorded during the period, Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias said in a statement, on Thursday.

He said Selangor led the list of states with the highest number of traffic accidents, with 2,701 cases, followed by Johor (1,348) and Kuala Lumpur (1,019).

Op Selamat has so far seen the issuance of 125,464 summonses – 77,042 of which involve six main offences, including the use of mobile phones while driving.

The road safety operation ends on Feb 1.
