KUALA LUMPUR: Supermax Corporation Berhad (Supermax) has arranged to contribute another two million pieces of medical grade gloves to the beleaguered city of Wuhan as the focal point of the fight against the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak.
The company said the gloves are in addition to the one million gloves already distributed by its local office and distributor in China.
Supermax, in a statement, said it will be sending one million Medical Grade Gloves to Wuhan today, on a special Chartered Flight coordinated by National Disaster Management Agency Malaysia (NADMA).
The remaining one million medical gloves would be sent to Wuhan on the next chartered flight on Feb 5, Supermax said.
The company added that the contribution is part of the pledge made by the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC) and the Malaysia Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association members to donate 18 million pieces of medical gloves to Wuhan.
A handover ceremony was held in Putrajaya on Jan 31.
“Malaysia can make a vital contribution to the fight against the coronavirus because Malaysia is the world’s largest manufacturer of medical gloves. It is really sad that the outbreak had occurred and claimed lives.
“We are truly sympathetic to the plight of the people affected, especially the people in Wuhan and would like to contribute towards the fight.
“The gloves donation is part of our humanitarian efforts. Giving is not about making a donation, it is about making a difference,” said Supermax’s Board of Directors & Senior Management.
Ambassador of China to Malaysia, Bai Tian had expressed his deepest gratitude to the donors in helping China’s fight against the coronavirus.
Supermax has been active in participating disaster relief efforts around the world such as the Hurricane Katrina, Ebola outbreak, SARS, H1N1 and now the coronavirus.
