Condo calamity: One rescued, another trapped

KUALA LUMPUR: At least two workers were trapped when a section of a condominium under construction in Taman Desa, here, collapsed this afternoon.

City Fire and Rescue Department operation centre spokesman said one of the victims had since been rescued following the incident but another worker was still trapped in the debris of the collapsed section of the building.

The spokesman said the total number of victims involved has yet to be determined.

“A total of 50 firefighters were deployed to the scene upon an emergency call received at 3.47pm today.

“According to the operation commander Muhammad Ridhwan Kamarulzaman, the section of the building which gave way comprised the sections between the sixth floor and the first floor,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the search and rescue (SAR) operation was being assisted by the department’s K9 and STORM units as well as the City Hall (DBKL) rescue unit.

“The rescue team is facing difficulties in locating the victim due to the unstable building structure and debris still falling down. The SAR is still ongoing.”

Meanwhile, in an immediate response City mayor Datuk Nor Hisham A Dahlan when contacted said he had issued a stop work order against the developer following the incident.
