KUALA LUMPUR: The Congress of the Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) wants the government to consider the welfare of part-time workers affected by Movement Control Order (MCO).
President of the civil service union umbrella body Adnan Mat said among the feedback received were part time workers were left in the lurch under the MCO.
“Please help the workers with part-time jobs, who do not have any more work and also those who are given unpaid leave. They do not have any source of income at this time,” he said in a statement today.
He added that with the enforcement of the MCO, Cuepacs had also received a number of other complaints.
“Among them are the closure of private nurseries as well as public nurseries offered by respective departments for those required to work (in the office),” he said.
For police, army, and uniformed organisations as well as civil servants who are required to work in the office, Adnan said there should be some form of discretion between the head of department and the staff to be provided with unrecorded leave in case of emergency.
This should include on matters involving taking care of their children, as most daycare centers are closed.
Adnan urged head of departments to be wise in managing such employee related issues instead of reducing their working hours by cutting corners.
“This is by cutting an hour's worth of overtime by claiming it was used for break time when the staff had been working round the clock for the country,” he said.
He said Cuepacs also called upon on all Malaysians to remain united in addressing the Covid-19 outbreak by following the government's instructions without any further dispute.
“Cuepacs recognises that the situation now is more exacerbated by the virus that does not help but lead to disputes and blaming one another. This situation is unnecessary at this time.
He said as frontline Civil Servants remain focused on addressing Covid-19 infection, people's cooperation is essential.
“Malaysians have just passed the first day of the Movement Control Order. There's still 13 days left. Sacrifices during this period determine the fate of Malaysia's past and future,” he said.
Adnan also called upon all 1.62 million civil servants, except those within the essential industry to stay home with their family members and control their movement during the MCO.
“If we all adhere to this, the public sector alone can control the movement of eight million Malaysians and contain the spread of Covid-19,” he said.
Adnan also expresses gratitude to all banks for their willingness to restructure their loans for the customers as recommended by Cuepacs on Mar 15.
