KUALA LUMPUR: National energy provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has urged users to be mindful when using electricity during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
This is to ensure they can optimise the tiered rebate for electricity bills introduced to lessen the burden of the people in facing the onslaught of Covid-19 infection.
Here, TNB has prepared guidelines for users to practise power saving while staying at home:
1. Make sure all windows, doors, and air circulation holes are closed while using the air conditioner. Use a fan to cool the room temperature so that the air conditioning temperature can be maintained between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius to save energy.
2. Clean the air conditioning filter to maximise the cooling process. Dirty filter will block the air flow and reduce the air conditioning efficiency.
3. Avoid using hot water for laundry unless necessary and maximise the use of washing machine.
4. Reduce the use of clothes dryer. Take advantage of the current hot weather to dry your clothes naturally.
5. Unplug electrical appliances when not in use and switch off electrical appliances such as fans in an empty room.
6. Reduce the use of water heater by reducing the bath time.
TNB said it is expecting an increase in the usage of electricity for residential consumers due to the extended MCO as announced by the government recently.
The company said the actual increase could only be known after the MCO as it had temporarily halted the meter reading operation from March 20 until further notice.
Bills issued from March 20 onwards will be estimated based on the previous month's consumption.
It was reported recently that all electricity consumers nationwide will be given discounts up to six months from April 1 to Sept 30 for consumption bill.
The discounts were announced on Feb 27 through the 2020 Stimulus Package and following the Economic Action Council on March 16 by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Under the tiered rebate, three million domestic consumers (monthly consumption below 200kWh) will receive a 50 per cent rebate; while 1.5 million consumers (monthly consumption between 201kWh and 300kWh) will receive a 25 per cent rebate; and another 2.2 million consumers (monthly consumption between 301kWh and 600kWh) will receive a 15 per cent rebate.
