KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened the applications for interstate travels to allow Malaysians who are stranded and away from their places of residence to return.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said applications need to be made via the Gerak Malaysia app.
Once the registration process is completed and necessary details are keyed in, a unique QR code will be generated which will be scanned by police personnel manning the roadblocks.
Huzir said applicants must furnish personal details such as their full names, MyKad or passport numbers, addresses, e-mails and telephone number. They must also allow the app to access their Global Positioning System (GPS) current location.
"Applications submitted through the Gerak Malaysia app will assist the police to determine the number of travellers involved and for us to prepare a travel schedule to ensure everything runs smoothly.
"Those who have applied must update their applications on the day they are allowed to travel so that a QR code will be generated automatically," he said.
Huzir said for the initial stage, May 1 will be designated for those travelling from Perak, Johor and Kelantan; May 2 from Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka and Pahang; while May 3 from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Terengganu.
He said applicants must travel on the day that had been set in accordance to the approved permit. Further details on the travel schedule and other guidelines would be made on Wednesday (April 29).
Huzir also reminded would-be travellers that permits are strictly for those who had been stranded in their hometowns since the Movement Control Order was announced on March 18 and wanted to return to their homes or workplaces.
"Applications for the permit for travel must be done on a need-to basis as stipulated under MCO and the people must not misuse the Gerak Malaysia app," he said.
He added that the Gerak Malaysia app also enables the people to apply for permits for necessary activities during the MCO for specific reasons.
The activities are emergency cases such as death of a close family member, to get medical treatment, to purchase necessities within the range of 10km from their homes as well as vehicle repairs and restoration of damaged homes.
He said applicants only needed to show the QR code provided and it would be scanned at police roadblocks.
For the time being, Huzir said only applications for interstate travels would be processed.
The Gerak Malaysia app can be downloaded at Google App Store, Apple App Store and Huawei App Gallery.
