Earthquake in Sumatra, tremors felt in Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA: Tremors were felt in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and parts of Selangor, Penang and Perak this evening following a moderate earthquake in north Sumatera, Indonesia.

Malaysian Meteorological Department through its Facebook page stated that the earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occured at 4.20pm, 27km from Padang Sidempuan, Indonesia at a depth of 10km.

However, there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added.

Residents in Putrajaya subsequently made several postings on Twitter to report the incident, claiming that their apartment buildings shook or swayed. – BERNAMA
