Tremors force evacuations of buildings in KK

KOTA KINABALU: Occupants of several buildings in the state capital were evacuated today following tremors felt in the city.

Yayasan Sabah Group corporate communications audio visual officer Azli Mohd Abu Bakar reported feeling tremors around 10am at Tun Mustapha Tower.

"I was seated when I noticed movement. The tremors lasted about 10 seconds," he said. "We were instructed to evacuate using the stairs and gather in the public area."

Approximately 20 people were on the 15th floor at the time, he added.

As a precaution, Azli stated all were advised not to return to the office for the day.

No tremors were detected at the state assembly legislative building, where proceedings continued on the third day.

Meanwhile, a Fire Department official said the department had conducted monitoring and evacuation of buildings in the districts of Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tawau, Sandakan, Ranau, and Kota Belud following the tremors.

As of press time, the department had deployed three teams from Kota Kinabalu station to Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, Wisma Wanita and Menara Kinabalu.

An earlier report quoting the German Centre for Geosciences said a magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurred in Mindanao, Philippines at 10.13am, and tremors were felt around Sabah and Labuan.

However, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
