Humble beginnings drive charitable efforts

KLANG: The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has seen many Malaysians coming forward to help out those affected most by the dreaded virus, with some chipping in by contributing much needed personal protective equipment (PPE) to our frontliners while others contributing food to the needy.

It was such generosity which saw some 200 individuals comprising taxi drivers, daily wage earners and the poor and destitute from around Klang, Port Klang and Pandamaran receiving food packs, groceries and other essentials from Port Klang-based shipping company Maritime Network Sdn Bhd.

Company director Datuk Seri Jeyenderan Ramasamy gave away the items to the individuals, all of whom have been severely affected by the after-effects of Covid-19 and the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The self-made entrepreneur said he did not hesitate to help out after Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) SWIBA (Selangor Wilayah Indian Business Association) got in touch with him with news that many of the poor and destitute in the Port Klang area needed help.

He said the recipients were thoroughly screened to ensure those truly deserving were given the much needed assistance.

Jeyenderan, who distributed the food packs from his office in Bukit Tinggi Klang, said he could relate to the hardship faced by the recipients as he himself grew up poor.

He said of late there have been many stories of poor families crying out for help as many were unable to work due to the MCO.

"I actually have just came back from Mentakab in Pahang after finding out from an NGO that there were some estate workers over there who were having difficult times.

"We distributed packs of food, groceries and other essentials to them and the joy on their faces was reward enough for me," he said, while expressing hope that things would turn for the better with the number of new Covid-19 cases on the decline.
