Two in family killed, three hurt in Kepala Batas crash

KEPALA BATAS: Two members of a family were killed and three others injured when the multi-purpose vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a drain and turned turtle at Km119.2 of the North-South Expressway here, last night.

The dead were identified as the driver of the Proton Exora, Muhammad Ruszamil Mohd Fazil, 20; and his mother, Rusnah Osman, 60. Both died at the scene.

Three others in the vehicle – which was en route from Sungai Dua to Sungai Petani at 11pm when the accident occurred – were seriously hurt.

The injured include a 2-year-old boy, who was diagnosed with internal bleeding from severe head trauma.

The exact cause of the accident is not yet known.

A team from the Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene minutes after receiving a call on the accident, and extricated the victims from the vehicle.

The injured were rushed to hospital.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

"We urge those with information on the accident to help us with the investigation," he said in a statement today.
