Penangites to enjoy Penang Bridge toll discount via RFID

GEORGE TOWN: Beginning next Tuesday (July 14), Penangites who have registered for the Touch 'n Go RFID will enjoy 20 per cent discount on toll charges for private passenger cars when travelling across the Penang Bridge.

The discount only applies to residents and those who are working and studying in Penang.

Since the bridge was opened more than three decades ago, Penangites had been given the privilege of a 20 per cent discount to encourage the use of the bridge as compared to the iconic ferry, which remained until today through the use of the Touch 'n Go card.

"However, soon, all of us will be able to travel between the island and the mainland in a swifter and more efficient manner using the RFID technology, and Penangites will continue to enjoy the 20 per cent discount.

"This move by PLUS is hugely welcomed. The RFID technology allows for faster throughput, reducing congestion at toll lanes. Its cashless and contactless transaction reduces human interaction at the lanes and reduces the risk of Covid-19 transmission," Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

The RFID system uses radio-frequency identification tags embedded on vehicles.

It is connected to the Touch 'n Go eWallet, which allows highway users to perform online top-ups, eliminating the need to physically reload using cash.

The RFID sticker is available at selected fitment centres throughout Penang for only RM35 each.

Highway users can refer to https://mx.touchngo.com.my/fitment-centres for details on the nearest RFID fitment centres available.

However, for Penangites and those who are working and studying in the Pearl of the Orient, they are required to install RFID stickers before registering with PLUS via https://jimatdipenang.plusmiles.com.my from next Tuesday onwards.

Meanwhile, PLUS managing director Datuk Azman Ismail said the RFID stickers, which are tagged to vehicles, offer higher security features and prevent abuse.

"It also offers the convenience of topping up via online channels and faster clearance at the toll plaza. RFID stickers do not require the use of batteries, which are often the common causes of failed SmartTAG transactions at the toll plazas.

"Above all, transactions via RFID can help to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. It is safer, much easier and a more convenient mode of toll payment, which supports the Penang government's move towards adopting new technology in enhancing the mobility of the people," he added.

Azman said those with Touch 'n Go cards could still enjoy the 20 per cent toll discount.
