BAYAN LEPAS: A security guard was killed early this morning when his car skidded and spun out of control on the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, also known as Penang Second Bridge.
In the 5.50am accident, the victim, identified as M Guna, 29, was driving a Proton X50 SUV when the vehicle went off the road and ended up on the divider at KM18.2.
He was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.
Barat Daya District Police Chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal said initial investigations revealed that M Guna was driving alone from Batu Kawan towards Batu Maung when the incident occurred.
The vehicle skidded, spun, and collided with the motorcycle lane divider.
"Firemen extricated the victim from the vehicle, and medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene," he said.
"Initial checks indicate that the victim had a valid driving licence, but the vehicle's road tax had expired in March."
The victim's body has been sent to the hospital for an autopsy, and blood samples will be tested for alcohol and drugs.
Police are also seeking witnesses and CCTV footage to assist in the investigation, particularly following claims by a lorry driver who alleged that the deceased's vehicle collided with his lorry before the crash.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," Kamarul Rizal said.
Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station Operations Commander Mohamad Hirman Mat Rodzi said that his team used special equipment to extricate the victim, who was trapped in the driver's seat.
