KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall is looking to build three-bedroom council homes for around 1,000 young families in the city.
Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said the project, estimated to cost RM200 million, would utilise the authority's land in Taman Danau Desa.
He said the proposal has been forwarded to Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa while the groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place end of this year.
"We estimate the project will take between one and a half to two years to complete, with each unit measuring 700 to 750sq ft," he said.
Nor Hisham said City Hall also plans to eventually set up council homes in all parliamentary constituencies.
And this is expected to take off after the first project is underway, sometime early next year.
The mayor said DBKL was looking into renting out the homes on a temporary basis over the period of three to five years with newlyweds and couples with small children given priority.
"There will be conditions attached to the rental and we are looking at maybe about a RM300 monthly rental," he told the press in an interview here today.
Nor Hisham said the new initiative differed from public housing that were meant as temporary housing for the needy.
"Public Housing units are rented out at RM124 monthly and occupants are supposed to leave after five years," he said.
