Drunken driver killed, passenger hurt in KL crash

KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old man, believed to be driving while intoxicated, was killed when his vehicle skidded and plunged into a five-metre drain in Sungai Batu here, last night.

An 18-year-old passenger of the Toyota Vios - also believed to be drunk - escaped with minor injuries.

The crash occurred at about 11pm, as the duo was headed towards the Kepong roundabout from Jalan Kepong, when the driver is believed to have lost control of the car.

The driver died at the scene, while the front passenger was rescued by passers-by, Bernama reported.

"The body was sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem," said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya.

A Kuala Lumpur Fire Operation Centre spokesperson said 20 firemen in two fire engines from the Jinjang and Sentul stations rushed to the scene for the rescue operation.

Both victims were removed from the wrecked car at 11.58pm, he said.

Zulkefly said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
