Survivors of Melawati chopper accident leave crash site

AMPANG JAYA: The survivors of the helicopter accident in Taman Melawati earlier this morning declined to speak to the press.

"No...no," was all Datuk Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said when he was approached by the media at the location of the crash in Jalan Taman Melawati here today.

The former Malaysia Airlines Bhd chief executive officer was among those on board the two helicopters involved in the accident.

Ahmad Jauhari was in a helicopter with Tan Chai Eian, 51, and they managed to manouvre an emergency landing at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Taman Melawati here.

At about 3pm, he and Tan were seen leaving the location of the crash in a police vehicle.

Earlier, Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Esha said police received a report about the crash at about noon.

The two helicopters, each with two occupants, comprising three men and one woman, were said to have grazed one another mid-air, based on eyewitness accounts, before one of it crashed in the 11.45am incident.

The helicopters took off from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang and were headed for Genting Sempah.

The two in the helicopter that crashed succumbed to their injuries and their bodies were found still strapped to their seats.

The deceased were identified as My Heli Club's captain and chief flying instructor Commander (Rtd) Mohamed Sabri Baharom, 56 and Mohamad Irfan Fikri Mohd Rawi, 44.

As of 4pm today, the police's forensics unit and investigators from the Department of Civil Aviation were still at the crash site amidst heavy rain.
