Pahang govt, agencies on the ground assisting flash flood victims

KUANTAN: The state government along with the related agencies are prepared to handle the flash flood should the situation worsen in the state capital.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail described the flash floods as nothing unusual as the state government was always ready to face any eventuality resulted by continues heavy downpour.

"Flash floods are unavoidable during heavy downpour and the state government initiates preparations based on the weather alerts (issued by Meteorological Department).

"The police, firemen, Civil Defence Force(APM) and Welfare department have been on the ground coordinating efforts to evacuate the flood victims and provide assistance.

"In some areas the water recedes fast while other places it takes quite some time," he told reporters in response to the flash flood situations and preparations made by the state government.

Wan Rosdy was met after the state-level 214th Police Day celebration at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee hall here today.

Continues heavy rain over the past two days had resulted flash floods in several low-lying areas in the state capital while the Sungai Lembing town which was inundated on Tuesday had recovered from the floods.

As of noon today, the number of flash flood victims here rose to 101 compared to 14 yesterday following non-stop rainfall for nearly 48 hours.

Kuantan APM officer Captain (PA) Zubaidah Said said four relief centres were opened to house the victims from 38 families.

The Pandan 1 multipurpose hall has 60 evacuees, Kampung Tiram relief (27 evecuees) followed by eight at the Bukit Kuin hall and six at the Mat Kilau public hall.

Meanwhile, Paya Besar member of parliament Mohd Shahar Abdullah in a Facebook posting reminded villagers in his constituency to be prepared for any eventualities.

"I visited Kampung Pandan 2 which was hit by the floods and urged villagers whose homes had been inundated to evacuate to the Pandan 1 multipurpose hall. We do not want any untoward incidents.

"I am concerned about the safety of the people in Paya Besar. Lets all pray that the floods will not worsen and the situation returns to normal soon," said the deputy finance minister II.
