KUALA LUMPUR: Flash floods struck several parts of the city and its outskirts today, the first day of Ramadan, following a torrential downpour that began at 4pm.
Among the worst-affected areas were Jalan Kuching near Taman Wahyu and Bulatan Batu Caves, Jalan Cheras near Cheras Sentral and the Billion roundabout, both directions of Jalan Maharajalela near the MRT station and Jalan Raja Chulan headed towards Muzium Telekom.
The heavy afternoon downpour also caused trees to be uprooted in many parts of the Klang Valley. This was confirmed by a City Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.
He said the authorities were still monitoring the situation and will provide updates from time to time.
"There are more areas that are affected. As of now, the operation is still ongoing," he said.
Social media users have also shared photographs and video of the flood.
One of them showed vehicles stranded in metre-deep floodwater near the EkoCheras mall, located along Jalan Cheras.
A 2km-long traffic snarl towards Kajang has also been reported as a result of the flash floods in Cheras.
