GEORGETOWN: Some parts of the island were hit by flash floods following heavy rain early this morning.
Several clips shared on social media showed the main road in Bayan Baru, particularly Jalan Mayang Pasir, inundated by floodwaters. Traffic congestion was also reported in these areas.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain alert in Penang and several parts of the country until 9am.
A warning is issued when signs indicate thunderstorms with rain intensity over 20mm/hour lasting close to an hour or expected to continue for more than an hour.
