486 nabbed for violating SOP

KUALA LUMPUR: Failure to register when entering premises, patronising entertainment centres and not wearing face masks remain among the most common offences committed by those who violate the Movement Control Order's (MCO) Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 486 individuals were arrested by police yesterday for committing these offences.

Ismail Sabri said 473 were slapped with compounds while 13 were remanded.

"There were 183 individuals who did not register themselves when entering premises while 136 were involved in activities at entertainment centres, 15 failed to observe physical distancing while 81 were nabbed for other offences.

"The police have been instructed to increase surveillance on SOP compliance in states and hotspot areas identified under the Hotspots Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system.

"Enforcement activities by local authorities will also be increased on the ground," he said.

The MCO Operation Task Force headed by the police carried out 65,401 inspections nationwide on SOP compliance.

Ismail Sabri said a total 4,323 compliance teams made up of 15,904 personnel conducted checks at 4,349 supermarkets, 4,972 restaurants, 3,786 hawkers as well as 3,876 banks and 11,182 government offices.

"They also monitored operations at 1,584 land transport terminals, 380 water transport terminals and 120 air transport terminals."

Ismail Sabri said the National Task Force in charge of leading the integrated Ops Benteng arrested 21 undocumented immigrants and seized 10 land vehicles on the same day.

He added that 161 boats and ships were sighted on national waters via 10 surveillance activities.

A total 221 Ops Penawar roadblocks were mounted nationwide by the police, Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) and the armed forces, 50 roadblocks under Ops Benteng PDRM and nine roadblocks under Ops Benteng Aksem.

A total 768 individuals were placed under quarantine at respective quarantine stations across the country. They were among 197,639 people who returned to Malaysia from abroad or were permitted to enter the country between July 24 last year and yesterday.

They had been subsequently placed under quarantine at 78 hotels and nine facilities nationwide.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said one out of 140 foreigners who were screened for Covid-19 tested positive yesterday.

According to the Human Resources Ministry, 692,708 foreign workers had been screened involving 35,824 employers.

"From the total, 10,239 tested positive for Covid-19 while 682,469 were found negative.

"As of today, 1,544 clinics are involved in the screening programme since it was made mandatory for foreign workers to be screened starting Feb 1," he said.
