New Sarawak Covid-19 cluster linked to longhouse

KUCHING: A new Covid-19 cluster linked to a longhouse in Sarikei was declared today after 101 people tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said it is a community cluster, involving a longhouse in Sungai Selangan.

"The cluster is the result of social and casual interactions among the residents," the committee said in a statement.

The longhouse has been placed under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from May 26 to June 11.

The committee also said Sarawak reported 594 new cases and six deaths today.

Of the new cases, 367 were close contacts, three imported cases (from other states) while 122 cases were individuals who went for screening at various health facilities in the state.

"About 60 per cent or 362 cases were reported in Kuching, Miri, Sarikei and Sibu."

Currently, there are 78 active clusters in the state after four clusters; namely Bambangan in Mukah, Kampung Tengah Betong, Jalan Roban Lama in Sarawak and Kemas in Kuching ended today.

To date, Sarawak has reported a total of 49,214 cases and 311 deaths.
