KUALA LUMPUR: Depressed that she had lost her job and chased out of her rented house, a woman attempted to jump off the 32nd floor of a condominium building in Sungai Buloh last night.
Fortunately, quick thinking by firefighters from the Selangor and Fire Rescue Department saved the woman in the 8pm incident at D'sara Central Condominium.
The woman was sitting at the ledge of the building when a team of 19 firefighters led by Sungai Buloh fire chief and operations commander Abdul Latif Mat Noor arrived at the scene.
Abdul Latif said it took them four hours to get the emotionally unstable woman to safety as they stood guard with rescue equipment to prepare for any eventualities.
"To keep her calm, we gave in to her requests to have an umbrella as it was raining and also pillows as she said she wanted to sleep there.
"However, she did not want any of us to go near her. Even Sungai Buloh police chief Superintendent Shafa'aton Abu Bakar went to the scene to comfort her.
"As the hours passed and it was close to midnight, we observed that she was becoming sleepy and tired. That was when we seized the opportunity to grab her and pull her to a safe place," he told the New Straits Times today.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the woman was then handed to the police for further action.
