GEORGE TOWN: Motorists along Gurney Drive here this morning were surprised to find a wild boar wandering along the famous seaside promenade.
Video footage and photos of the wild boar soon made their way onto social media.
Prior to the 9.05am incident, the same wild boar was spotted near the Pulau Tikus market.
Northeast district Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Muhammad Aizat Abdul Ghani said they rushed to the scene as soon as they were alerted by a motorist.
"Five personnel tried to catch the wild boar but to no avail before it ran to the main road. It then continued to run to the bushes behind the Gurney Drive food court.
"We then contacted the state Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for assistance," he said today.
Aizat said Perhilitan then decided to shoot the wild boar dead for fear that it would disturb and endanger the public.
"The wild boar was shot dead at about 9.40am before the operation was called off," he added.
No injuries or damages to public properties were reported.
