Baling families back to flood relief centres in less than 24 hours

ALOR SETAR: A total 55 flood evacuees in Baling had to return to relief centres in less than 24 hours after their homes were struck by another flood late yesterday.

State Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Committee Secretariat chief Major Mohd Muaz Mohd Yusof said the flood relief centres in Banggol Derom and SK Titi Gantung were reopened late yesterday and early today.

He said the evacuees from 13 families, had just gone home yesterday but had to return to the relief centres after their homes were flooded following several hours of heavy downpour.

"The Banggol Derom flood relief centre was reopened for 46 evacuees from 11 families at 11.45pm yesterday while the SK Titi Gantung relief centre was reactivated at 2.10am today to provide shelter for nine evacuees from two families," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Muaz said another two flood relief centres were activated in Baling as the flood situation worsened in the district.

"The SK Tanjung Pari flood relief centre was activated at 9pm yesterday, currently housing 26 evacuees from eight families while the SK Siong relief centre was opened about 10.25pm to provide shelter for 21 evacuees from eight families," he said.

As at 8am today, the total number of flood evacuees in Baling district stood at 102 people from 29 families.

Meanwhile, 137 evacuees from 34 families are still taking shelter at the Tanah Merah Rakan Muda Hall in Pendang.
