Over 300 Baling residents evacuated as floodwaters rise

BALING: Over 300 residents in Baling have been evacuated to five temporary flood relief centres (PPS) since yesterday evening after Sungai Ketil overflowed due to several hours of heavy rainfall.

Baling Disaster Committee chairman Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya said that the five PPS were activated in Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, Kompleks Rakan Muda Batu 42, SK Siong, Maktab Mahmud Bongor, and SMK Parit Panjang after floodwaters submerged the affected areas.

"A total of 327 evacuees from 125 families have been relocated to the five PPS since last night. Rescue agencies are closely monitoring the situation," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, 64-year-old Hasnah Hashim from Kampung Tanjung Merbau in Pulai subdistrict said that her son, Mohd Shauki Abdul Wahab, 24, and her had sought shelter at the PPS after their home was inundated with waist-deep water around 2am.

"This is the second time we've had to take refuge at the PPS. The floodwaters rose so quickly because our house is near the riverbank," she said.

Another evacuee, Salasiah Harun, 63, said that her family was helped by rescuers from the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) to relocate to the PPS at 7pm yesterday.

"The APM rescuers transported us by boat after the village was submerged in floodwaters," she recounted.
