KUALA LUMPUR: It was a long first day of school for 14 Year 1 and Year 2 pupils of SK Kebangsaan Sri Serdang who became trapped in their classrooms when they were surrounded by waist deep flood waters during the downpour earlier this evening.
The pupils, along with 18 of their teachers, moved to an upper floor of the school building while waiting to be rescued by the Fire and Rescue Department.
A team of 10 firefighters from the Serdang station waded through floodwaters and carried the pupils on their shoulders to safety.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the pupils were transported out of the school compound via two vehicles.
"The pupils were handed over to their parents who were waiting at the scene. The teachers who were stuck have been saved as well.
"The floodwaters have subsided to knee level and the situation is improving. The operation was completed at 10pm," he said.
Norazam said his men also saved a 58-year-old woman when her Taman Sri Serdang house was inundated by flood waters.
"The victim, who is paralysed and lives alone, was brought to a nearby multi-purpose hall. She was later picked up by a relative," he added.
