KUALA LUMPUR: Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) lanes will be available for light vehicles throughout a major part of the Plus Highway from Jan 15, next year.
In a statement to the New Straits Times today, the highway operator's Head of Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, Syed Mohammed Idid said the lanes for Class 1 vehicles would be made available in all toll plazas along the 800km-plus Juru, Penang to Skudai, Johor stretch of the North South Expressway.
The Works Ministry in a statement said the highway network on the West Coast would be equipped with the lanes to provide, convenient, safe and speedy services to highway users.
It also said the implementation was in line with the Intelligent Transport System Blue Print which included the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) that was also spearheaded by the ministry.
"Those who use the system can enjoy a smoother ride without stopping at the RFID lanes by travelling at a speed of 30km/h.
"It also enables one to perform touchless payment that reduces the risk of Covid-19 infections. It also offers cashless digital security and top ups via Touch 'n Go e-Wallet that eliminates the need to visit top up lanes or counters," said the ministry, adding that the tag can be obtained at a low and reasonable cost.
The ministry however affirmed that Touch 'n Go dan SmartTAG were still in use but would be phased out in stages to enable MLFF systems to be instituted.
As such the ministry urged road users to make the switch promptly.
"RFID tags can be purchased online, via Touch 'n Go e-Wallet platforms, the Touch 'n Go portal or agents that have been selected to fit the gadgets themselves."
"One can also buy and fit the tags at 39 such centres in Peninsular Malaysia."
The ministry said these centres would be increased to allow more users to get their tags so the transition can be made.
