Police probing Facebook video alleging patrol team solicited bribe from Singaporean driver

KUALA LUMPUR: Dang Wangi police are investigating a viral Facebook video posting alleging that a patrol team solicited a bribe from a Singaporean driver.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Dellhan Yahaya today urged those with information on the incident to come forward to assist investigations.

"At about 12.40pm today, police detected a 24-second video that was uploaded on Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=3170733549864698&extid=CL-UNK-UNKUNK-A...) that allegedly showed patrol personnel extorting a Singaporean.

"Initial investigations found that the said incident took place near Lalaport shopping centre, Jalan Pudu, about 12.30am on April 10.

"A thorough investigation has been initiated as soon as the video went viral on Facebook.

"Police will not compromise with any policeman involved in such wrongdoings," he said in a statement today.

Noor Dellhan added that individuals with information can contact district Integrity and Standard Compliance Department head Assistant Superintendent Jaya Dalloh at 014-6396758, the Dang Wangi district headquarters at 03-26002222 or the city police hotline at 03-21159999.

The 24-second video, believed recorded on a car dash camera, shows a man throwing a nondescript item into the police car which pulled over near Lalaport mall.

The police car registration number was visible in the video.

The Singaporean driver claimed that police had asked him for money over offences that he did not commit, to avoid being arrested and fine.

The post read: "Polis in KL. I'm Singaporean. Went there and they claimed I did not possess Malaysian driving licence, no visa to enter KL, claimed I drove (in the) opposite direction which I did not and claimed issued IC is printed out as I kept passport in hotel.

"Told me to avoid being arrested and fine I can 'treat' them to which they meant money.

"(In the) video you can see they told me to throw the money into the car and ensure no one is watching. My hand should not be in the car. Hence, I quickly pulled my hand away. Happened on 10 April 2022 at 1230pm."
