Abide by tasamuh concept, appreciate and accommodate differences among each other

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has called on Malaysians to display tolerance and togetherness in their day-to-day lives to nurture a prosperous society.

The prime minister, in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri special address, said Malaysians should uphold the Islamic concept of tasamuh (tolerance) to appreciate and accommodate differences among each other, in keeping with the boundaries of Islam.

"Throughout the last two years, the Covid-19 pandemic have allowed us to reflect upon ourselves.

"Despite the trials and tribulations, the Malaysian Family have shown utmost strength and perseverance in overcoming the challenges.

"The solidarity of the Malaysian Family provides the foundation for the government to focus on driving the country's recovery so that the people can lead comfortable lives once again.

"Therefore, I call upon all Malaysians to abide by the tasamuh concept - an Islamic teaching that emphasises on tolerance and togetherness - in line with the Malaysian Family concept.

"It should serve as a guideline for all of us so that the Malaysian Family does not become a mere tagline, but rather become a norm to create a prosperous community," he said in a statement today.

Ismail Sabri also urged Malaysians to protect and preserve the country's peace that has been built through mutual respect among people of different races, culture and faith.

"Malaysia is still fortunate to be blessed with peace and harmony due to our political stability and cooperation from the Malaysian Family.

"The world is currently facing serious geopolitical threats, among others, being the Russia-Ukraine and the Palestine-Israel conflicts.

"We should take heed of these conflicts since they could jeopardise regional peace and the global economy, if not resolved immediately," he said.

Ismail Sabri also advised the people to exercise self-control, though many regulations have been relaxed, to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones.

"To enliven this year's Syawal, I have announced toll-free rides at nine highways, including the north-south and east coast routes. Meanwhile, another 21 highways will offer toll discounts up to 50 percent.

"Make use of this opportunity and the relaxations of the standard operating procedures (SOP), effective May 1, to visit your parents, relatives and friends to bolster ties.

"Do spend some time to visit open houses and make cemetery visits.

"For those heading back to their hometowns, drive safely and reach your destinations safely," he added.

"Muslims in the country will be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri tomorrow (May 2)."
