Youths important to keep Sabah industrial sector running

KOTA KINABALU: Youths are vital for the Sabah Maju Jaya Roadmap to meet the supply and demand of industry players.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said manpower from youths was one of the main contributors to the state's economic development.

He said the Manpower Department would ensure the human capital in Sabah receives adequate education and training through the Training Institute of the Manpower Department (ILJTM).

Speaking at the ILJTM 2022 convocation held at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Training Institute here today, Dr Joachim, who is state industrial development minister, said Sabah thanked the federal government for protecting the welfare of their workers.

"The wage subsidy programme, for example, allows employers to continue to pay salaries to local workers though they are struggling to recover from their business losses.

"Similarly, the Career Generator 3.0 programme allowed employers to hire new employees from among trainees, graduates, youths and jobless."

Dr Joachim said the state government was working to boost the technical and vocational education and training by offering skills courses and scholarships to target groups in line with the Sabah Talent and Entrepreneurship Programme.

The state government also strived to improve basic infrastructures in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park and Palm Oil Industry Cluster, as they were the main contributors to the state's economic growth, he said.
