Penang NGO demands action against school bullying case

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A non-governmental organisation (NGO) has brought to light an alleged bullying incident involving a Year Five pupil at a primary school here.

The 11-year-old's mother has since lodged a police report on the incident which was said to have happened at about noon yesterday.

Malaysian Tamil Kural president David Marshel claimed the boy sustained injuries on the face and all over his body after he was repeatedly beaten by several of his classmates.

"I hope the relevant authorities, including the district education office and the school as well as the police, will investigate this matter promptly.

"Bullying should not be allowed at all," he told the New Straits Times.

Elaborating, David alleged the boy, who was hyperactive, was always subjected to bullying by other pupils, who at times pulled down his pants and beat him.

He said the boy's mother had complained to the school previously but he claimed she was advised not to proceed with the matter.

"However, we can't compromise this time around after he was beaten, leaving him with injuries on the face.

"The school must be held responsible as there was no immediate action by the class teacher.

"This is a hyperactive child with special needs. Why should he be subjected to constant bullying?" he asked.

David also urged the district education office to consider transferring the boy to a special school to help with his studies.

When contacted, Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy, who holds the education portfolio, said he would lodge a complaint with the state Education Department for immediate action on the bullying case.

"I will get further details about this incident from David.

"I have sent a message to the head of the state Education Department for immediate action," he said when asked about the matter.
